"Best Prep for The PMP Exam"

Hello Everyone,

Now that the winter is upon us, and the inclement weather has arrived, there will be no Hopkinton meetings if the Hopkinton schools close due to weather conditions. Listen to the radio or watch the TV for school closings, if there is a delay, the meeting will still occur. Whenever the weather conditions are poor, please stay home. There isn't anything worth risking an accident over.

The agenda for this Friday's Hopkinton Networkers Group (HNG) meeting will be featured by our speaker, Elaine Jackson. The facilitator for this week will be William Lam. We will devote the first hour, from 10 to 11 AM to the following agenda: Welcome, Landings, Announcements, New Member Intros, and Needs & Leads. Please arrive early, so we can make every effort to start on time. In the second hour, Elaine will give a talk about "Best Prep for The PMP Exam."

"Best Prep for The PMP Exam"

Many are confused on what is necessary to be prepared for the PMP Application. What things to add to the application and what information to leave off.

Some of the questions to be addressed: What if I can't remember the details of my positions? What if I cannot find the manager I worked with? What happens if my application gets audited? During this session we will also look at your work experience and determine what is important to report to PMI. We will field questions from the audience on challenges encountered. Please bring your resume and your questions for direct help.

About Elaine Jackson, CEO Holistic Project Management Consulting:

Elaine Jackson is a highly proficient and dedicated Project Management Coach who enjoys teaching managers to understand how they can pass the Project Management Certification Exam with confidence!

creating your online presence

A job seeker asks “What is online presence and why do I need it to find a job?” In today’s job search, you can have great qualifications and excellent connections, but without online presence, you may be overlooked. Online presence is your value displayed and expressed online. It’s what people find when they search on your name. It’s how recruiters and hiring managers notice your expertise and how you show your value to others in your industry.
Carrie Krueger writes more about how to create an online presence for your job search here

Remember - if you are in the RI area, Community Camp is scheduled for Apr 23 at RISD and there are four free passes available for job searchers. One of the sessions planned is to answer your questions about LinkedIn. The session is titled - "I'm on LinkedIn, now what?" I'll facilitate the session to answer your questions on how to get the most out of LinkedIn for your job search.

Can you help Free Geek Providence?

Dear Friend of Free Geek Providence,

As you may know,  Johnson & Wales University has been very generous in allowing us to use space at their facility on Harborside Campus to process outgoing donations to organizations.

The "cage" at JWU transformed us as an organization.  We went from a group of motivated individuals, to an organization that has donated over 500 computers to organizations and individuals that might not otherwise have them.

We now know we are losing the space at JWU, and we will need to move out the first week of April.  In order to cover moving expenses, rent, and insurance, we need to raise $4000 in the next few weeks.

Free Geek Providence can remain a viable organization and grow to offer more services, but only with your help.

If you have seen and believe in the difference a computer can make in the life of a child, an out of work parent, or a friend trying to make it through school, please show your support for Free Geek Providence today with a donation of $25, $50 or $100 dollars.

Please make checks payable to Free Geek Providence and send to:
Free Geek Providence
Po Box 603109
Providence, RI 02906

We are a 501(c)3 and all donations are tax deductible. If you have questions please email forrest@freegeekpvd.org or kim@freegeekpvd.org

Thank you,

Lessons from the college admissions process

High school seniors are waiting and receiving admissions letters of acceptance (or rejection) from their choice of colleges right about now. There are many parallels to the job search that are worth looking at.
Preparation starts early. Students begin preparing for college almost as soon as they start school. But job seekers rarely prepare for a job change until they need to make one. For best results, preparation for a job search should be happening all the time. That includes maintaining a strong network, keeping up online presence and continually adding new achievements.
Practice makes perfect. Even a student who is well prepared for college is not necessarily ready for the admissions process including essay writing and interviewing. The most successful applicants learn and practice those skills. In the same way, we are not trained for resume writing and interviewing. We need to learn and practice both to get good at them. Don’t assume you know how to job search. What you don’t know can hurt you.
Achievements matter. Imagine a college applicant sending a high school transcript without grades. Telling what courses you took but not what grades you got is like a resume that describes positions you held but leaves out achievements. Just as high school students highlight great grades, make sure your resume shares your great accomplishments.

Stick out a huge hand and pull someone out of the muck

Tim asks a very good question:
I wonder what % of the world population has been out of work at some point in their lives. Anyone know?
If you’ve ever been in a job search, you are part of the crew. The community. And you understand the job search process. The hard work. The ups. The downs.
And I’ll tell you something. I know a lot of people who aren’t a part of this crew. No job search on their resume. They are not part of the “in-crowd”.
They don’t get it.
In fact, those who’ve never been out of work are sometimes known as the employed elite. Complaining about someone having more than one job over the last five years. Asking stupid or impossible questions during a job interview. And having no patience for someone who is genuinely trying to deliver their best.

Hopkinton Network Group meets Fri - Mar 18th at 10:00 AM

Hello Everyone,

Now that the winter is upon us, and the inclement weather has arrived, there will be no Hopkinton meetings if the Hopkinton schools close due to weather conditions. Listen to the radio or watch the TV for school closings, if there is a delay, the meeting will still occur. Whenever the weather conditions are poor, please stay home. There isn't anything worth risking an accident over.

The agenda for this Friday's Hopkinton Networkers Group (HNG) meeting will be featured by our speaker, Fran Ganek. The facilitator for this week will be Madeliene Moore. We will devote the first hour, from 10 to 11 AM to the following agenda: Welcome, Landings, Announcements, New Member Intros, and Needs & Leads. Please arrive early, so we can make every effort to start on time. In the second hour, Fran will give a talk about "Refreshing the Body, Mind, and Soul during Unemployment (and any other Time)"

"Refreshing the Body, Mind, and Soul during Unemployment (and any other Time)"

In this experiential presentation, Fran will offer attendees an opportunity to empower themselves through wellness and stress reduction activities. This will be followed by a special demonstration to assist attendees with employment and related questions/concerns.

Fran will begin by sharing a brief excerpt from the book, Peace is Every Step: The Path of Mindfulness in Everyday Life, by Thich Nhat Hanh. Through this excerpt, Fran will facilitate a very simple exercise for conscious breathing that can bring an awareness to the calming and unifying effects of body and mind. Next, she will lead a guided meditation (approximately ten minutes in length) to help attendees ground and center the body, from Belleruth Naparstek's book, Staying Well with Guided Imagery: How to Harness the Power of your Imagination for Health and Healing. Following the meditation, since Fran has assisted many people who have experienced crises and losses as a counselor, clairvoyant, and medium, she will take a few minutes to enter into a meditative state, and will then offer messages through a question and response format, as time permits, on employment and related concerns. (Please bring a concisely-posed question if you wish to ask her a question during this allotted time.)

Fran's mission is not to predict the future, nor does she claim to do so, however through this work, she often brings spiritual guidance, inspiration, validation, healing energy, and sometimes enlightenment dotted with humor as she relays her visions and messages. Prior to responding to questions, Fran will give a brief explanation of what to expect during this time.

About Fran Ganek:

Fran is a former teacher of preschool through post-secondary levels, with a Bachelor Degree in Elementary and Special Education. With a Master of Education in Career and Personal Counseling, she worked many years at Worcester State College in career/counseling services, adult education, graduate admissions, and academic offices. She now enjoys educating people in wellness and stress reduction, having studied a variety of healing modalities such as Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), Reiki, and Pranic Healing. Fran is also an advanced clinically certified hypnotherapist.

The Cat in The Hat's advice

The sun did not shine.
It was too wet to play.
So we sat in the house
All that cold, cold, wet day.

I sat there with Sally.
We sat there, we two.
And I said, "How I wish
We had something to do!"
Of course, when you are searching for your next job, there is plenty to do. Not like in Dr Seuss's The Cat in The Hat.

There are job boards to check: Monster.com, Craigslist.org
The Ladders LinkedIn has job postings too!

There is your network to care for. Reach out to wish someone a happy birthday, or a nice day. Check in to see how they are doing.

Always be looking for an opportunity to position yourself.

The Cat in the Hat said
"I will pick up the hook.
You will see something new.
Two things. And I call them
Thing One and Thing Two.
These things will not bite you.
They want to have fun."
Then out of the box
Came Thing Two and Thing One!
And they ran to us fast.
They said, "How do you do?
Would you like to shake hands
With Thing One and Thing Two?"
See, coming right out of the box, the two Things were immediately networking!

So what is the real message from Dr Seuss and The Cat in the Hat?
1 - take care of your network
2 - don't be afraid to have some fun!

I hope this was of some help for your job search effort!

Attention: job seekers - Community Camp - Apr 23

There will be a Job Search Jam Sessions track at Community Camp, April 23!

Community Camp is an informal, participant-driven unconference that brings together small business owners, artisans, students, job seekers and other members of the community. We'll share what we have learned on reaching out to the local and global community. We'll have a conversation about how participating in groups is an effective tool to make our voices heard.

Sessions will be held in the following topics:

  • Marketing - scaling your message, reaching an audience, developing a "personal brand", going viral
  • Community - social media, networking resources, job search information
  • Media - the hows, whys, whats, and wheres of creating new media
  • Second Purpose - green, environmental-focused sessions; recycling, repurposing

As an unconference, Community Camp requires active participation from attendees, either in asking questions and engaging in discussion or in leading a breakout session. Sessions may be prepared and announced in advance, but they may also be organized on the fly at the event.

When:  Saturday, April 23, 2011 – 8:00 am to 1:30 pm
Where: RISD Auditorium, 17 Canal Street, ProvidenceRI 02903

What does it mean to have a 'track'?
Amongst the sessions during the day, there will be a series of them focused on the job search with an emphasis on social media.

What is a Community Camp?
Community Camp is an un-conference about social media and online networking. It is an open and collaborative event with discussions and interaction from attendees. Anyone with something to contribute or with the desire to learn is welcome and invited to join. Some sessions will be planned ahead of the event, but plenty of spaces will be open for the topics YOU want to discuss and learn.

Why should I go?
Community Camp is all about social media/networking, and its relevance and usefulness to community, business and otherwise.

What does it cost?
Tickets are $20 ($10 for students), but all are expected to participate and/or present. You can participate by giving a presentation, demo, or joining into another cooperative event, being on a panel/roundtable, or in other ways helping out on event day.

If you want to register, please do so here

Or save some money:
There is a special deal for those who want to go but are un-employed or under-employed! Steve Sherlock has arranged to provide four (4) tickets to help job seekers attend.

How do I get one of those tickets?
Send an email to Steve (shersteve at gmail dot com) and state your case:
Clearly and concisely, explain what you have been doing as part of your job search and how participating in Community Camp would help your effort.

Note: Your paragraph will be published here to help showcase you and your efforts in social media if you win one of the scholarships.

Dr Seuss goes fishing

one fish
two fish
red fish
blue fish

....

This one has
a little star

This one has a little car.
Say! What a lot
of fish there are.
Such is the familiar opening for Dr Seuss' book written in 1960. How does that help those on the job search?

One of the demographic factors of this recession is how the downturn has affected folks of all ages (although there are age groups where they have been affected more so than any other).

From the US Dept of Labor JOLT Summary
Net Change in Employment

Over the 12 months ending in January, hires totaled 48.4 million and separations totaled 52.4 million, yielding a net employment loss of 4.0 million.
What is JOLT? The Job Opening and Labor Turnover report. There is good new in the report:
There were 2.7 million job openings on the last business day of January 2010, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. The job openings rate rose over the month to 2.1 percent, the highest the rate has been since February 2009.
What does this mean for those looking for a job?

There are really a whole lot of fish in the sea. The competition is tough but not impossible.

Dr Seuss closed "one fish two fish red fish blue fish" with:
Today is gone. Today was fun.
Tomorrow is another one.
Every day,
from here to there,
funny things are everywhere.

Be confident! Be yourself!

Network and have some fun meeting folks along the way.

Help them in whatever way you can.

One of them will help you.

One of them will be the fish you need to land your dream position.

Good luck! I hope this has been helpful for you.

Dr Seuss on foot notes

Dr Seuss can help the job search?
Yes, he did more than write children's books.

In Dr Seuss's usual good manner, he goes directly to the foot of the matter in this book. As a beginning reader, the text is simple and to the point. What is the message?

Get on your feet, get moving!

Meet people! The book ends with:
Left foot. Right foot.
Feet. Feet. Feet.
Oh how many
feet you meet!
The art of networking is meeting people, making connections, finding things in common.

The in-person networking is a must. Online networking is effective but more so when the individuals can meet face to face.

Meetup.com is a good source for networking groups. If you don't find one in your area, you can easily start one.

Check on LinkedIn for groups in your subject area.

Check with your local unemployment agency for information on groups in your neighborhood.

Once you are part of one group, you can find out about others. The one good thing about networking groups is that they are a benefit to all new and regular participants.

I hope this helps your job searching effort! Ge out and meet folks, one of these connections will be the one to lead you to land your ideal position.

what Dr Seuss does to your tongue, you shouldn't to your resume

Indeed, Dr Seuss' book Fox in Socks builds from simple tongue twisters to rather elaborate and complex ones.
The book begins by introducing the main characters, Fox and Knox (sometimes called "Mr. Fox" and "Mr. Knox") together with some props (a box and a pair of socks). After taking those four rhyming items though several permutations, more items are added (chicks, bricks, blocks, clocks), and so on. As the book progresses the Fox describes each situation with rhymes that progress in complexity, with Knox periodically complaining of the difficulty of the tongue-twisters
.
What does this have to do with the job search?

Have you read your resume out loud and really listened to it?

Does it contain any tongue twisters?

Acronyms beyond comprehension?

Buzz words that sound great and mean nothing?
While I am open to the initial nature of an assignment, I am decidedly disposed that it be so oriented as to at least partially incorporate the experience enjoyed heretofore and that it be configured so as to ultimately lead to the application of more rarefied facets of financial management as the major sphere of responsibility.

Dr Seuss says go!

What has Dr Seuss got to do with the job search?

Didn't he write books for children?
Yes, he did. He told a story in a simple manner. There is a message in most of his stories. This is one of a series revealing the message that can help those of us with the job search effort.

The time has come.
The time has come.
The time is now.
Just go!
Go!
GO!
I don't care how!

This opens Dr Seuss' book "Marvin K Mooney Will You Please Go Now." Marvin is told in so many ways to simply go away. He finally does, when he decides he wants to.

What is the message for us?

Action is required for your job search and only you can take the proper steps to get it going. Procrastination will not help. Get going.

If you lack in confidence, get with someone to help build up your confidence.

Ultimately, the choice is yours. The actions are yours. When you decide, then the job you seek will too be yours!

Dr Seuss watches Mulberry St

Did you know that the first book Dr Seuss published was "And to Think that I saw it on Mulberry St". And that it was finally published in 1937 after being rejected by more than 20 publishers?

And how many of your resumes have been rejected in your job search? More than 20?

Dr Seuss shares something in common with you, rejection!

The one key lesson for the job search to be taken from Dr Seuss's first book (aside from persistence) is to understand and recognize the time and place for sharing your creativity and imagination.

If you are targeting a corporate position, a totally different resume may not get you where you want to be.

No matter what position you are vying for, your behavior on Facebook and in other social media places should be reconsidered. Is it consistent with the image or brand you are trying to create?

Pictures of your weekend exploits at a drinking party or posing in scantily clad attire may not be the best thing to obtain that corporate finance position.

There is a time and a place for everything. The time for the job search is now. Time for play may be later!

I am not the only one who has been inspired by Dr Seuss. Creedence Clearwater Revival gives some credit to Dr Seuss and this book for their song "Lookin' Out My Back Door"

I hope this helps your job search effort.
