HNG Meeting December 16, 2016; Agenda: Open Forum Discussion

Hello Everyone,

We are in the winter months, so if the Hopkinton schools are cancelled on the day of our meeting then we do not meet; however, if there is a delay, then we do meet. Even if the schools are not closed, if the weather is bad, it is best to stay home then risk an accident.

The agenda for this Friday's Hopkinton Networkers Group (HNG) meeting will be featured by an Open Forum Discussion. The facilitator for this week will be Emilia Gordon. We will devote the first hour to the following agenda: Welcome, Landings, Announcements, New Member Intros, and Needs & Leads. Important Note: Please make a serious, concerted effort to arrive before 10:00 AM. We are going to start the meeting on time at 10:00 AM. In the second hour, we will conduct an Open Forum Discussion on Various Topics.

One of the team members, namely, Pat Rosenthal, had an excellent suggestion to make the meeting more festive for the coming holidays, i.e., we come to the meeting wearing a holiday tie or hat/scarf, a piece of jewelry or funny socks, etc. The idea being that it can be turned into an ice breaker or a help to make you a more memorable candidate beyond the qualifications.

If you would like to bring any special food, i.e., cookies, cupcakes, or any baked item that would be nice also.

Open Forum Discussion on Various Topics and Networking:

Quote From the Internet:
"....networking is about being genuine and authentic, building trust and relationships, and seeing how you can help others."
Suggested topics:
* Positive attitude:
Emotion and mindset
Getting motivated / started in the morning
What to do to get motivated
* Recruiters: one-night-stand types versus long-term relationship ones
* Interview questions (what about experiences with video interviews?)
* Other income
eBay
Survival jobs: contract / part / full time (can a survival job open an unexpected door?)
* Communicating effectively:
Value statement as presented by Bill Lippincott
Elevator speech: 10, 15, 30, and 60 second speech

Recap of HNG Meeting of December 2, 2016

Our 180th meeting had 21 people, this is 2 less than the previous meeting; four signed the New Member list. Gil Krispien was our facilitator. There were four introduction speeches.

We had a speaker, Kristen Beyer, who talked about "Weathering job transitions. Preserving your future."
The following was discussed:
Learn ways to preserve your future during a job transition
* Face uncertainties while managing expenses and reducing liabilities
* Protect your investments against volatile market conditions

HNG Meeting November 4, 2016; Agenda: Speaker on "Power Networking"

The agenda for this Friday's Hopkinton Networkers Group (HNG) meeting will be featured by speaker, Eric Ross. The facilitator for this week will be Pat Rosenthal. We will devote the first hour to the following agenda: Welcome, Landings, Announcements, New Member Intros, and Needs and Leads. Important Note: Please make a serious, concerted effort to arrive before 10:00 AM. We are going to start the meeting on time at 10:00 AM. In the second hour, Eric will talk about "Power Networking."

Power Networking

A relationship-referral process to build your professional network Most professional and executive jobs are found through networking; indeed, most professional jobs are never advertised and can only be accessed directly in the “hidden job” market. Further, networking becomes truly essential to many executives-in-transition in the current market, as many companies auto-screen out longer-term unemployed executive applicants. This presentation will give attendees all the tools necessary to develop extensive networks that access the hidden job market and that will pay continuing dividends throughout one’s career. Attendees will learn a comprehensive step-by-step process that starts with people they already know and generates a continuing source of new and valued professional contacts. Through networking, many of these contacts become “helpers” in the job search and often become life-long professional or personal friends. Networking in a job search is truly relationship marketing of oneself in his/her target market. The presentation will give all attendees a thorough overview of the total person-to-person networking process.

Key Benefits of Attending – Attendees will:
• Gain an understanding of the true purpose and value of networking
• Become exposed to key tools to be used in the process
• Learn how to start the “power” networking practice
• Understand how to effectively leverage existing contacts
• Learn key things never to do when networking
• Understand the different kinds of potential contacts
• Learn effective ways to outreach to networking referrals
• Learn ways to truly differentiate oneself
• Understand how to conduct a meeting with a networking contact
• Learn how to optimize the results of a networking meeting
• Understand how power networking can continue to generate new contacts

Eric Ross

Eric Ross is often acknowledged as New England’s master networker. Eric is an accomplished senior business executive who has successfully walked-the-walk
of job transition, through networking. He has held a number of senior operations and general management positions in the manufacturing, renewable energy, and
service industries. As a commissioned officer, he also served in leadership roles in U.S.A.F. manufacturing, industrial management, and logistics operations. His
presentations on networking have been given at outplacement firms, to numerous networking groups, and to professional associations and alumni groups (such as
the Harvard Business School Boston Association, Tufts Alumni Association, and the Career Services group of the Boston Chapter of Financial Executives International), all with rave reviews. Eric landed his most recent position, Chief Operating Officer of New England Renewable Energy Systems, in Holbrook, MA, through the networking approach and methods explained in his Power Networking presentation.

HNG Meeting - Sep 2 - Sixty-second Introduction Practice Session

An apology to those who attended the HNG meeting on Friday, August 19th. I received an indication there was disappointment that there were no tables setup when everyone arrived. There is a simple explanation: I came in early and setup the greeting table with the nametags, New Member sign-in sheet, and the money jar. This was followed up by making the coffee, the hot water urn, and the table setup for the coffee cups, sugar, milk, lemonade, and napkins. This was then followed up by setting up the snack table with the cookies and napkins. I then setup the projector screen, the projector, the lectern with microphones and the sound system to make sure everything was alright for the facilitator and the speaker. I lastly had to setup the hall with the tables and chairs; however, since the tables were in the storage classroom and not easily accessible to remove by myself, I had only one alternative and that was to just setup the 40 chairs with no assistance. Since I was under a serious time constraint and had to leave as early as I could to help my daughter, this was all I could do. I will do my utmost to make sure the tables are setup for the next meeting so as to accommodate those who have grown accustomed to having them.

The agenda for this Friday's Hopkinton Networkers Group (HNG) meeting will be featured by either a speaker or Sixty-second Elevator Speech Practice Session. The facilitator for this week will be Ronaldo Lu. We will devote the first hour to the following agenda: Welcome, Landings, Announcements, New Member Intros, and Needs & Leads. Important Note: Please make a serious, concerted effort to arrive before 10:00 AM. We are going to start the meeting on time at 10:00 AM. In the second hour, we will have either a speaker, which I am trying to arrange because our scheduled speaker cancelled to handle a family issue, or a Sixty-second Elevator Introduction Practice Session.

Speaker and Topic

Unknown at this time because arrangements are being made as of this writing to acquire a replacement speaker.

Or

Sixty-second Introduction Practice Session

This will be our Plan-B in the event a speaker could not be scheduled. We do not have individual introductions as often as we should simply because it is not a popular event, and the attendance suffers, yet it is one of the most important things we should do. We have had many new people give their introduction speeches during the past few months, and it is time for the new people to know who the rest of us are. I sincerely hope everyone who has attended the meetings thus far will attend this event to support our group.

Recap of HNG Meeting of August 19, 2016

Our 173rd meeting had 35 people, this is 5 more than the previous meeting; nine signed the New Member list. Emilia Gordon was our facilitator. There were eight introduction speeches.

We had a speaker, Hannah David, who talked about "Risk Management - Job Search." She was very good.
This comprised the following:
The forecasting and evaluation of job search risks together with the identification of procedures to avoid or minimize or reduce their impact.

Schedule for HNG Meetings:

September 2, 2016 TBD
September 16, 2016 Kristen Beyer

General Information

The networking group meets in Hopkinton, at St. John the Evangelist Church parish hall. The meeting occurs, from 10 to 12 noon, and will meet the first and third Friday of the month. The parish hall has a capacity for 250 people and there is plenty of parking spaces in the parking lot and on the street. We chose the first and third Friday to allow everyone to attend the Acton Networking Group or any other networking group, if they wanted, on the Friday we do not meet.

We will maintain our close affiliation with Acton Networkers by using the same list-server to share information between the groups. Any e-mails specific to the Hopkinton Networking Group (HNG) will be indicated in the subject line either by "Hopkinton Networking Group" or "HNG"; this way anyone attending these meetings will know the e-mail is intended for them.

We will follow the following agenda items:
* Welcome
* Landings (with doughnuts)
* Announcements
* New member introductions
* Needs and Leads
* Speaker(s), Workshop, or Focus Group

If anyone wants to join our team, please let one of us know; we could always use the extra help and input for ideas.
