The Career Jungle Gym – A New Model for Managing Your Career
There’s no such thing as a straight line in career development anymore. Over the course of four (or more) decades in the workplace, people are now changing jobs an average of 15 times. While there are more opportunities in today’s marketplace than ever, it’s also more complicated. In this talk I’ll describe a new model for managing your career, and give you tips and tricks for successfully navigating the complexities of today’s career paths.

Best Kept secret - Massachusetts One Stop Career Centers
Hello Everyone,
Surprise! We are in the winter months, clearly demonstrated by the too many snow storms, if the Hopkinton schools are cancelled on the day of our meeting then we do not meet; however, if there is a delay, then we do meet. Even if the schools are not closed, if the weather is bad, it is best to stay home then risk an accident.
The agenda for this Friday's Hopkinton Networkers Group (HNG) meeting will be featured by speaker, Lee-Ann Johnson. The facilitator for this week will be Gil Krispien. We will devote the first hour to the following agenda: Welcome, Landings, Announcements, New Member Intros, and Needs & Leads. Important Note: Please make a serious, concerted effort to arrive before 10:00 AM. We are going to start the meeting on time at 10:00 AM. In the second hour, Lee-Ann will talk about "Best Kept Secret - Massachusetts One Stop Career Centers."

Recap of HNG Meeting of February 6, 2015:
Our 139th meeting had 13 people, this is nineteen less than the previous meeting; four signed the New Member list. William Lam was our facilitator. There were four introduction speeches.
We reviewed the Goals / New Year's Resolutions made at our January 2, 2015 meeting. Only William Lam, Jeff Beauchaine, and myself listed what we had specified as our goals at the January 2nd meeting, and we met not only the two required goals, but others as well.
Of the eighteen people who attended the January 2nd meeting, only three returned to discuss whether their goals were achieved. This was a significant disappointment, and it is unlikely this exercise will be repeated.
Schedule for HNG Meetings:

March 6, 2015 Stephen Gaughan "Medical Insurance Options"

Time to Crtl-Alt-Delete Your Life
During the last practice interview question session, I found five new homes for some good books to read. One of them was Crtl-Alt-Delete Your Life by Mitch Joel. I just finished reading the book via Audible and had posted this recently on my own webpage. It is worth re-posting here.
During the course of this wonderful conversation, Match says:
There are so many points to take off on this conversation between Jonathan Fields and Mitch Joel, I probably could do a series of posts to cover a month. However, it is not my takeaway that matters. It is up to you to do something. Start by spending about 45 minutes with Jonathan and Mitch here.

"I don't get a world where people go to the gym everyday to fine tune their body and spend zero time on anything that happens above the neck."That shows the passion for life long learning that drives Mitch. Any reader here should recognize I share that life long learning passion as well.

Compass Lite
From my RSS Feed from TechCocktail I find this
Compass Lite is a free web app that asks users to choose between “Me?” or “Not Me?” by way of a visual slider that presents a set of character traits and/or tasks. This winnowing down leads users to an interactive display of career opportunities that match the user’s personality, organized by education level. Detailed information about careers, salary ranges, career outlook, and academic programs are offered as well.
This is a far cry from searching through lists of majors and careers, or making career decisions based on projected salary. It’s easy to lose track of time choosing between “Me?” or “Not Me?” and before you know it, you’re presented with an interactive dashboard tailored to your answers – with actionable recommendations.
As an experiment of one, I tried the survey answering me or not me for each photo. Quick and easy, it seemed to peg me pretty well.
How does this work for you?
Note: it seems to require a login via your Facebook account. I didn't find a way other than that. It does let you select how you'll broadcast the updates (and for the trial I selected "only me").
You can try Compass Lite here https://compasslite.woofound.com/sign_in

Use LinkedIn to change your career path!
Supposed you did want to change your career path, how would you do that?
There was an article I found earlier this week that I shared as part of #the5 for that day:
When you want to change, what does the career change path look like?
Since most folks on LinkedIn have included at least three prior positions (to get the 100% complete profile), you can look for the position where you want to be. Search for it, then look into some of the folks who hold that position now and see how they got there. The mileage may vary for your but the information on how they got where they did is open.
If you want more details, there is a warm call or contact you can now make! The odds are, with a good lead like you can craft, they will be most willing to share some of their story.

Where would you prefer to sit in your ‘Career Car’?
A guest post by Lenore Mewton on Tim's Strategy says:
Knowing yourself, fully, is key to navigating the present and future. While job search strategies are crucial, your greatest career strategy is self knowledge. A house without a foundation crumbles. A career strategy ‘house’, without a solid foundation of self knowledge, is vulnerable to all the elements.
- Driver (you’re at the controls)
- Passenger (helps driver, but has no controls)
- Kids in backseat (headsets and texting – just ‘along for the ride’), or last, but not least . . .
- Trunk (no vision, trapped, no choice).
I hope this resonates with you as much as it does with me.

Where do you want to sit in the car?
Knowing yourself, fully, is key to navigating the present and future. While job search strategies are crucial, your greatest career strategy is self knowledge. A house without a foundation crumbles. A career strategy ‘house’, without a solid foundation of self knowledge, is vulnerable to all the elements.
Greater knowledge, e.g. strengths, motivators, what makes you ‘tick’, values, creates more choice, building career resilience.Think about it this way—where would you prefer to sit in your ‘Career Car’:
- Driver (you’re at the controls)
- Passenger (helps driver, but has no controls)
- Kids in backseat (headsets and texting – just ‘along for the ride’), or last, but not least . . .
- Trunk (no vision, trapped, no choice).
I hope this resonates with you as much as it does with me.

You can use LinkedIn to find out how to get there!
Matt Youngquist has a great posting on how to use the search features of LinkedIn to figure out how people have changed from one profession to another. He provides a few examples like this one for a lawyer who is not happy with law.

Good luck exploring your new path!
Example #2: “Matt, I’m an attorney who is sick of the stress, the billable hours, and the constant jokes being made at parties at my expense. What else am I qualified to do, though? I’m really not in a position to start over, go get a new degree, and work my way up from the bottom of the ladder again.”
Proposed Solution: Again, mosey on over to the LinkedIn Advanced People Search page, and this time, type “law degree” OR “juris doctor” in the Keywords box. Then type the phrase -attorney -counsel -lawyer -partner -paralegal -judge -candidate -juris -doctor in the Title box. You have to use a bit of trial and error, of course, to figure out the exact words to exclude (using the minus signs) in the search, so don’t worry if it takes you a couple of searches to narrow down the best set of results. This time, however, my search unveiled 20,000+ people across the country who hold law degrees, but who are NOT currently working in an obvious role within the legal system. Pretty cool, eh? Each of these people blazed a trail before you — and figured out how to parlay that expensive degree in a different direction!Read the full posting at Matt's blog:

Making Memories Technician
Greg BD has a new job. He calls himself a "making memories technician."
Isn't that a good title? It says a whole lot if you think about it.
Kirk is a Chief Morale Officer.
Mignon is "The Grammar Girl"
Phil is the "Make it Great" guy
Scott is know as "That nametag guy."
What would your new title be? Have you thought about it?
