Make the effort, good results will happen!

From Twitter on Thursday came the good word:

RT @valnelson: Yay! Good folks. RT @mmpartee: @shersteve FYI, @jprotalks is now an intern for@theCSAgency because of PodCamp! #pcwm #WesternMA

Jocelyn took the initiative to go and participate in PodCamp last Saturday. The connections and information gathered there resulted in her obtaining an intern position.

Next time one is one the calendar, consider going to PodCamp (an unconference). It just may be the opportunity you've been looking for!

Put your best voice forward

Just in from my run this morning. I spent time on the run reviewing interview best practices. (Yes, I am wired like that). One thought in particular came to mind. It recalled the study done about communication and what percent of conversation is text (about 7 percent) with 15-23 percent tone of voice and the remainder body language.

Anyway, in order to take advantage of our natural body tendencies, I would recommend doing phone screen interviews blind folded. Yes, you read that right. Blind folded. Recall that when you go into the dark, when you are blind folded your body is more aware of your surroundings. Your other senses tune up because sight (your major input) is not longer available.

By taking the phone interview blind folded, you can focus on the conversation solely with your hearing. You'll be more aware of their text and tone of voice. You'll be less distracted by your own surroundings.

Notes?
You shouldn't need them, You are the expert on what you have done and how you can do it.

You should be able to focus on the voice of the person on the other end of the line and glean as much information as possible while putting your own best foot (in this case voice) forward.

If you are looking for work and want to explore how to use social media in your search, consider applying for a free ticket to PodCamp WesternMA.

What is your price?

We each have our price. The question is, what’s yours?

Tamsen McMahon asks this question in her post here

Especially during your job search this is a question to address and have an answer ready for. Go into the interview prepared to wow them and win an offer. Be prepared for what it will be.

Avoid finding out after the fact that it is not what you want, or can live with. Know what you need to. Use your network of friends to help find out as much as your can before. It will make your decision so much easier.

First Scholarship to PodCamp WesternMA

I would really like to attend the PodCamp. I am familiar with social media and networking but need to learn more. I have the basics down for blogging, Facebook, Twitter, and Flickr. I know very little about podcasting and videocasting. Discussion and interaction with leaders and attendees would really help me add to my existing knowledge. My small design studio and gluten free cooking blog would greatly benefit if I could figure a way to efficiently use these resources to grow and connect to the community. Best yet, I'd love to find out more about possible jobs in the social media field that would welcome my background and experience.

Congratulations to Sarah Platanitis! She is the first recipient of a scholarship to PodCamp WesternMA.

Sarah's gluten-free cooking blog is  Sarah In the Kitchen

PodCamp Western Mass - Scholarships Available

There will be a Job Search Jam Sessions track at PodCamp Western MA!

When:  Saturday, February 5, 2011 – 9:30 am to 4:00 pm
Where: Westfield State University, Horace Mann Center, 333 Western Ave, Westfield MA 01085

What does it mean to have a 'track'?
Amongst the sessions during the day, there will be a series of them focused on the job search with an emphasis on social media.

What is a PodCamp?
PodCamp is an un-conference about social media and online networking. It is an open and collaborative event with discussions and interaction from attendees. Anyone with something to contribute or with the desire to learn is welcome and invited to join. Some sessions will be planned ahead of the event, but plenty of spaces will be open for the topics YOU want to discuss and learn.

Why should I go?
PodCamp is NOT just about podcasting, but about all social media/networking, and its relevance and usefulness to community, business and otherwise. This PodCamp is all about blogging, Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, podcasting, videocasting/YouTube, and any other online community tools.

What does it cost?
Tickets are $25 ($10 for students), but all are expected to participate and/or present. You can participate by giving a presentation, demo, or joining into another cooperative event, being on a panel/roundtable, or in other ways helping out on event day.

And there is a special deal for those who want to go but are un-employed or under-employed! Steve Sherlock has arranged to provide four (4) tickets to help you save some money.

How do I get one of those tickets?
Send an email to Steve (shersteve at gmail dot com) and state your case:
Clearly and concisely, explain what you have been doing as part of your job search and how participating in PodCamp would help your effort.

Note: Your paragraph will be published here to help showcase you and your efforts in social media if you win one of the scholarships.

Podcamp Boston 5 – September 25 & 26, 2010

Are you ready for the future?

Are you new to new media like blogging, podcasting, Twitter, Facebook, and wondering where to get started?
Are you a veteran of all things 2.0 and wondering what to learn next to propel you into future success?

PodCamp Boston, now in its 5th year, aims to help you answer these questions and many more. On September 25-26, 2010 at the facility of Microsoft New England Research and Development Center, PodCamp Boston will bring together the best and the brightest - including you - for two days of learning, sharing, and growing your social media skills.

Who should attend PodCamp Boston?
You. It doesn't matter where you are on your social media journey, whether you just starting Tweeting yesterday or whether you're one of the decade-long bloggers. It doesn't matter whether you're the CEO of a Fortune 50, a director of a non-profit, or a guy who likes to knit on the air. What does matter is that you are an expert in something. You have questions AND answers, and PodCamp Boston is the best opportunity to contribute and learn all at once.

What will you learn at PodCamp Boston?
PodCamp is driven by what YOU want to learn and share. Twitter? Sure. Facebook? Of course. Blogging? Definitely. Podcasting? By the bucket. Last year we introduced a way to have more conversations and less presenting with discussions.  This year we want to continue that success and give you the opportunity to learn about the things that would help YOU.

More important, we want you, as you register, to consider leading a session in which you pose a burning question that you absolutely must get the answer to. Maybe you need to know how to figure out the ROI of Facebook. Maybe you need to learn how to make great Internet video. Whatever your burning question is, we want you to ask it at PodCamp.

Take a look at some of the planned topics:
  • Clearing the Hurdles - on pitching social media marketing initiatives
  • Blogging 100/101/102
  • Preparing for the future - What tips, techniques, tactics, and ideas can we share for preparing for the future?
  • Monitoring, Management & the Promise of Social CRM
  • Twitter, Facebook, Foursquare... It's Taking Over Our Lives!
  • Social Media for Fundraising and Nonprofit Marketing
Ready to get started?
PodCamp Boston 5 is a mere $50 to participate, but we guarantee you'll get so much more. Not only will you benefit but the net proceeds from the event will be donated to the Greater Boston Food Bank feeding some very hungry kids in the Boston area.  Register today, as we've only got a little over a hundred spots left, and they're going wicked fast.
