U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBPO) - Job Opportunity Announcement – NOW OPEN

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is currently hiring 2,000 Customs and Border Protection Officers (CBPO) by September 30, 2015.  A CBPO entry-level job opportunity announcement is currently open on USAJOBS until May 11, 2015 or until 15,000 applications are received.

CBP Officers play a vital role in preventing terrorists and terrorist weapons from entering the United States and enforcing customs, immigration, and agriculture laws and regulations at U.S. ports of entry.

To ensure the accomplishment of our mission, CBP requires that every employee be reliable, trustworthy, and fit for duty. To meet these standards, applicants must undergo and successfully pass a thorough background investigation (which includes a polygraph examination), a medical examination, two preemployment fitness examinations, a drug test, and a structured interview in order to be placed in a CBP Officer position. Information on how to apply for the CBP Officer career is located on the following CBP webpage:  http://www.cbp.gov/careers/join-cbp/which-cbp-career/cbp-officer.

On this website, you will find the following information:
·            Reporting for Duty and Training

CBP's Office of Human Resources Management (HRM) recruits for the CBPO positions using short-term vacancy announcements throughout the year.  This provides candidates the opportunity to move through the hiring process quickly and efficiently, and facilitates hiring quality candidates to report to the Office of Field Operations Academy fully prepared to join the proud ranks of CBP Officers.  Below is the schedule for the Job Announcements for CBP Officers and Border Patrol Agents that will be open throughout 2015.

Tidbits from the 5th Job Search Jam Sessions

Thank you for participating in the 5th Job Search Jam Sessions.

24 folks came together to learn, network, and share. Sessions were lead by Joanne Dustin, Gil Krispien, Ken Picard, and Steve Sherlock. Judith Herman and one other person (whose name escapes me) stepped up to lead a session. This was a great example of the power held within us brought forth by the unconference format!

Joanne's presentation can be found here:

The financial report will be published here in a couple of days.

Marc's Monday Newsletter
Good Monday morning, Stephen,
I've been writing this newsletter for almost ten years now, and I'm asked for career advice all the time. I love when some little bit of advice really resonates for someone and makes a difference in their search -- and I love it when you reach out to let me know!
The consistently best bit of advice I've ever given, that has come back to me over, and over, and over again, is this:
When it gets to that part of the interview with your future boss where they ask, "well, do you have any questions for me?", say yes, and ask:

"How do I help you get a gold star on your review next year?"

This bit of advice has helped more people in more interviews than any other bit of advice I've shared over the years.

Why?

Well, the interview process lends itself to self-absorption. We spend so much of the time talking about ourselves that we forget that we sound like one of those people who only talks about themselves.

Or conversely, we become "job analysis engineers" and ask all sorts of questions about the job and reporting structure and how it fits in with the company's five-year plan and so on. I love getting questions from candidates in interviews, but I do have to admit I feel that they're not quite getting the point of a "face-to-face" interview when they pull out six pages of typed, single-spaced questions and promptly bury their nose in their papers without making eye contact.

We get so obsessed with the details of the job that we forget about the work.

Working together and being a good addition to the team mean being concerned with how you are making the team successful. And that means being concerned with how much you are helping to make your boss successful.

Asking this question shows that you have empathy. It shows that you have an interest in your boss' career and future success. It shows that you are not just a self-absorbed "what's-in-it-for-me" kind of person. And it shows that you know you are there to "give" as much as you are there to "get".

Subscribers like you say the interviewer's face lights up when you ask this question. I have heard time and time and time again from our six million subscribers how effective it's been in interviews.
The gold star question is an easy tip to implement in your job search: it's easy to do, easy to understand, and it's easy to measure.

And that makes it my best bit of career advice ever.

So thank you, Dear Readers, for trying out all my advice over the years, and for making this one my best.
I'm rooting for you!

P.S. And I'd like to thank my wife's law school classmate, Erin Abrams, now at Citigroup, for reminding me that the "silver star" question is just as important -- if you're interviewing people who will report to you, or any future colleagues who are a rank below you, ask them, too, how you can help them succeed next year on their review. Believe me, they will be very grateful.

Marc's Monday Newsletter
Good Monday morning,

We took over Grand Central Station here in Manhattan a week ago Thursday to bring you "JobCentral" - a day of interviews with employers, tips and advice on the job search, a free membership gift for attendees, and, of course, our own "Ask Amanda"!
Thanks for coming out and making it a great day! For all 5½ million of you across the country who might not have made it to New York, you can get Amanda's recap and free access to all of the materials here.

Amanda Augustine led the way on a day of great advice for people looking to get ahead.

Allison Hagendorf, fresh from dropping the ball with the Mayor in Times Square on New Year's Eve, hosted the day for us. Here she's giving away one of our prizes on the day.

We had real, actual interviews going on....

...with top employers like Hearst....

...and speakers from HP.....

...and more interviews....

...and even more interviews...

...and coffee...

...and great advice...

...and more interviews!

Our whole team loved helping out.

Our head of Product, Selena Hadzibabic, introduces our new feature "Scout" -- I'll be telling you more about it next week!

The whole product team loved hearing your reactions, and surprise, and feedback, about Scout!

Amanda and JobCentral host Allison Hagendorf.

Amanda interviewed by Pix 11.

Speaker Pamela Johnston answers the question "Who are you anyway?"

Handing out info and demos.

"Behind the scenes" -- Amanda talked pretty much non-stop for 6 hours. On her feet. In heels. Give the woman a hand.

For us, the chance to show you our new products and hear from you directly were the biggest upside of the day.

Before the crowds arrive, Amanda checks how her fantasy football teams are doing. Just kidding, she's checking her notes and posting on her Twitter account @JobSearchAmanda.

Our CEO, Alex Douzet, says thank you for making it a great day.
We hope you got a lot of positive information and energy out of the day of taking over Grand Central, Readers, and we'll keep bringing you more ways to be successful in your job hunt throughout the year!
I'm rooting for you,
Marc Cenedella

LinkedIn for Your Job Search: Building Quality Business Relationships Online

Hello Everyone,
The agenda for this Friday's Hopkinton Networkers Group (HNG) meeting will be featured by our speaker, Jen Vondenbrink. The facilitator for this week will be William Lam. We will devote the first hour, from 10 to 11 AM to the following agenda: Welcome, Landings, Announcements, New Member Intros, and Needs & Leads. Please arrive early, so we can make every effort to start on time. In the second hour, Jen will talk about "LinkedIn for Your Job Search: Building Quality Business Relationships Online."

LinkedIn for Your Job Search: Building Quality Business Relationships Online

Jen goes beyond teaching you how to collect numbers of connections and helps you understand how to use LinkedIn as a tool through your job search and beyond to build long lasting relationships.

About Jen Vondenbrink

Jen Vondenbrink is a professional speaker, consultant and educator bridging the gap between business and new media for business owners and job seekers. Her Fortune 500 process integrates entrepreneurial and corporate experience with today's every changing business environment.

Recap of HNG Meeting of October 19, 2012:

Our 86th meeting of HNG had 16 people, this is 17 less than the previous meeting and 2 signed the New Member list. Barb McKee was our facilitator. There were three introduction speeches.

We had an Introduction Workshop whereby those attending filled out New Member and How to Write a 30 Second Elevator Speech forms then volunteered to give their talks. This was very good; however, the intent was for everyone to give his and her introduction speech, and not everyone did so.

Schedule for HNG Meetings:

November 16, 2012 Cheryl Landes "Working with Contract Agencies"
December 7, 2012 TBD
December 21, 2012 Anne Crawford "Elevator Speech"

General Information:

The networking group meets in Hopkinton, at St. John the Evangelist Church parish hall. The meeting occurs, from 10 to 12 noon, and will meet the first and third Friday of the month. The parish hall has a capacity for 250 people and there is plenty of parking spaces in the parking lot and on the street. Around the perimeter of the parish hall are rooms to allow us to have focused network groups or for any other purpose we need. We chose the first and third Friday to allow everyone to attend the Acton Networking Group or any other networking group, if they wanted, on the Friday we do not meet.

We will maintain our close affiliation with Acton Networkers by using the same list-server to share information between the groups. Any e-mails specific to the Hopkinton Networking Group (HNG) will be indicated in the subject line either by "Hopkinton Networking Group" or "HNG"; this way anyone attending these meetings will know the e-mail is intended for them.

We will follow the following agenda items:
* Welcome
* Landings (with doughnuts)
* Announcements
* New member introductions
* Needs and Leads
* Speaker(s), Workshop, or Focus Group
* Cleanup

For those new members who give their introductions, this is what we would like to know:
* Name
* Skills and Value Statement
* Where have you been?
* Where are you going?
* Your title
* Your target companies
* Geography of search
* Name and e-mail address

If anyone wants to join our team, please let one of us know; we could always use the extra help and input for ideas.

Directions:
Take Rt. 495 North/South and get off Exit 21A. Go through three traffic lights. Colella's Supermarket is on the right at the third traffic light. The first street after the third traffic light is Church Street, take a right turn. The church is on the right. Go around to the left of the parking lot and go into the side entrance of the parish hall.

Depending upon where you live, perhaps you may want to use Mapquest for a more direct route. The address of the church is:
St. John the Evangelist
20 Church Street
Hopkinton, MA 01748

"Hey, what's wrong with me?"

Regular readers and participants of the Job Search Jam Session in September will recognize Hari Narayanan who is quoted in this article:
Cortes's colleague at the Milford center, business service representative Hari Narayanan, said local companies are willing to hire candidates - even unemployed ones - who show initiative.
"It's more of what people have been doing while they're unemployed," he said. "Employers are looking for a skill-set. Their number one concern is finding the right people to come work for them."
But some laid-off job hunters say it's not so easy to convince companies they're worth hiring - or even deserving of an interview. Lisa, a 44-year-old Framingham resident who withheld her last name so as not to hinder her job search, said her setbacks since losing her human resources job in May have made that task even more difficult by hurting her self-confidence.

There may be nothing wrong with you. Times are tough. Be confident in yourself. Layout a plan, set a target and start networking. The more you network, especially with information interviews, the better your chances will be of finding the right information and making the right connections to land where you want to be.

Not just any job, a just job

What is the jobs challenge?

What are just jobs, and why are they important?

How do you promote just jobs?

Just Jobs, a new program at the Center for American Progress, seeks to extend the benefits of economic integration and trade to all of the workers who power the global economy. The moral reasons for providing workers with “just jobs,” including labor rights, appropriate compensation, social protections such as healthcare and pensions, and opportunities for economic mobility, are well understood. Less understood is how promoting these policies in developing countries alongside developed ones benefits both in a world that is closely connected through technology, flows of people, goods, services, and capital.

In your eyes

When you meet someone for the first time, do you look in their eyes?

Do you maintain eye contact while you talk?

Business comes down to personal relationships. How are you doing?

Be positive, be resolute!

Inspired by HRMargo's post linking to the same song.
