Governor Patrick proclaims November as "Hire a Veteran Month"

Patrick Administration to collaborate with regional workforce partners on series of events, career fairs, and training sessions

BOSTON – Friday, November 1, 2013 – In recognition of Massachusetts' dedicated, highly skilled and hard-working veterans, Governor Deval Patrick today proclaimed November 2013 as "Hire a Veteran Month."

"It is imperative that we honor the brave men and women who have served our country by giving them the resources to find good jobs at good wages," said Governor Patrick. "By working with employers and providing training for the jobs that are open, we will grow opportunity for our veterans and strengthen our economy."

As part of "Hire A Veteran Month," the Patrick Administration is collaborating with regional workforce partners on a series of events, career fairs, and training sessions that will take place in every region of the Commonwealth throughout November (see full list below).

"The Patrick Administration is proud to collaborate across state agencies and with organizations throughout the Commonwealth to host and support a series of events in November and during the year to promote employment opportunities for veterans," said Labor and Workforce Development Secretary Joanne F. Goldstein. "'Hire A Veteran Month' complements the Administration's ongoing work and partnership with academia, the private sector, and workforce organizations to assist veterans during their transition to civilian life and long-term employment."

Massachusetts is a leading provider for veteran services, and the Patrick Administration continues to implement employment assistance and workforce training programs for members of the armed forces, veterans and their spouses. Veterans receive priority service at each of the Department of Career Services (DCS) 32 One-Stop Career Centers around the Commonwealth. Each One-Stop Career Center has at least one staff member dedicated to assisting veterans. In the last fiscal year, DCS provided services to approximately 14,000 veterans in the Commonwealth.

Last week, the Patrick Administration announced it has more than doubled cash grants available to employers hiring Massachusetts veterans regardless through the state's Hiring Incentive Training Grant program. Any for-profit company and non-profit organization that contributes to the Massachusetts Workforce Training Fund are encouraged to apply. Eligible employers may now apply for grants of $5,000 for each new hire who meets the Hiring Incentive Training Grant program requirements. Employers may receive up to $75,000 each calendar year. Upon approval, payment will be available to the employer once the new hire has retained employment for at least 120 days.

As part of the Patrick Administration's campaign to encourage companies to hire and train veterans, the Administration is also partnering with major trade associations. As part of an initiative first launched two years ago, trade associations are encouraged to hire veterans, circulate information on veterans' benefits and educate local employers about the skills service members gain the military.

"Employment is a critical component for a veteran's successful transition back into civilian life," said Secretary of Veterans Services Coleman Nee. "Massachusetts leads the nation in veterans' services and with the partnerships developed with DCS, business organizations and veteran organizations we are maximizing resources to provide our veterans with the employment opportunities they have earned."
"The Chamber supports hiring veterans for many reasons," said Timothy P. Murray, President and CEO of the Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce. "The skills and discipline acquired during their service were invaluable in ensuring our nation's freedom. This passion and drive translates into productive employees who help our local businesses to thrive. The Chamber is pleased to be one of the many organizations in Central Massachusetts that is reaching out to our businesses to educate them on the benefits of hiring veterans."

Among its many partners, the Administration is collaborating with the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce on a pilot Veteran Mentoring & Networking program known as "Boots to Business. Designed to become a statewide model, this initiative provides veterans with access to many of Greater Boston's most successful businesses across a variety of industries, including financial services, technology, and others. The program connects each veteran with a mentor in the business community who can guide them through the process of securing long-term employment. To date, over 41 Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce members have become veteran mentors and 31 veterans have registered to be mentored.

"The Chamber is a proud supporter of 'Hire A Veteran Month,' and we appreciate the Patrick Administration's efforts to encourage the hiring of Massachusetts veterans," said Paul Guzzi, President & CEO of the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce. "Our veterans have given much for our country, and can play a critical role in expanding our region's overall economic success.  The Chamber is honored to be working with the state to strengthen connections between veterans and the employer community through our 'Boots to Business' program."

As part of a statewide initiative, DCS and the Department of Veterans' Services (DVS) have also worked with the Massachusetts Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MassMEP) to leverage state funding used to train veterans in the manufacturing industry.  Collaboration is also underway through the Massachusetts Medical Technology Veteran Program to provide veterans with training and networking opportunities within the medical device and diagnostic industries.  Another program, Edge4Vets, is also assisting veterans seeking employment in the biotech industry.

In March of this year, Governor Patrick signed an executive order to help small businesses owned by disabled veterans gain access to contracts for public projects in the areas of construction, design and goods and services procurement and also announced the establishment of guidelines to assist members of the armed forces, veterans and their spouses with professional licenses so that they can prepare and apply for job in the Commonwealth.

Below is a list of events scheduled as part of "Hire a Veteran Month" throughout the Commonwealth. To learn more about services for Massachusetts veterans, visit www.mass.gov/veterans or about the Massachusetts Department of Career Services, visit http://www.mass.gov/dcs.

"20 percent of people 50 or older say they have personally experienced prejudice or discrimination"

"The AP-NORC Center poll found 55 percent of those 50 and older who have sought a job in the past five years characterized their search as difficult, and 43 percent thought employers were concerned about their age. Further, most in the poll reported finding few available jobs (69 percent), few that paid well (63 percent) or that offered adequate benefits (53 percent). About a third were told they were overqualified."

PATRICK ADMINISTRATION INCREASES INCENTIVES FOR COMPANIES HIRING VETERANS AND LONG-TERM UNEMPLOYED

Patrick Administration Increases Incentives for Companies Hiring Veterans and Long-term Unemployed

BOSTON – Wednesday, October 23, 2013 – Building off record investments made by the Patrick Administration in Veterans Services, the Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development (EOLWD) today announced it has more than doubled cash grants available to employers hiring Massachusetts residents who have been unemployed for 6 months or more, or Massachusetts veterans (regardless of length of unemployment). Increased grant funding is available through the state's Hiring Incentive Training Grant (HITG), a program of the Massachusetts Workforce Training Fund.

"This grant program is a valuable incentive for employers who want to boost their workforce but may need additional resources to add new hires," said Labor and Workforce Development Secretary Joanne F. Goldstein. "Through this program, we are supporting the long-term unemployed and veterans looking for work as we encourage companies to grow their business and workforce in Massachusetts."

Any for-profit company and non-profit organization that contributes to the Massachusetts Workforce Training Fund, a state fund enacted in 1998, are encouraged to apply. Eligible employers may now apply for grants of $5,000 for each new hire who meets the Hiring Incentive Training Grant program requirements. Employers may receive up to $75,000 each calendar year. Upon approval, payment will be available to the employer once the new hire has retained employment for at least 120 days.

A copy of the Hiring Incentive Training Grant application, eligibility requirements, Frequently Asked Questions and other relevant materials are available at EOLWD's website www.mass.gov/hiringgrant. Grant awards are subject to funding availability, and applications are reviewed on a rolling basis.

Prior to October 2013, awarded eligible employers received no more than $2,000 per new hire, and no more than $30,000 per calendar year through the previous guidelines of the Hiring Incentive Training Grant. The increased grant funding through the Hiring Inventive Training Grant is one of many business resources promoted by the Patrick Administration to assist companies growing or expanding in Massachusetts.

The Hiring Incentive Training Grant is part of the Workforce Training Fund Program, managed by the Commonwealth Corporation, which provides resources for employers to better train Massachusetts workers. Recently, EOLWD announced approximately $2.8 million in Workforce Training Fund grants, totaling more than $15.6 million in grants awarded by the Patrick Administration since July 2012 to help train over 15,400 Massachusetts employees in the last year alone. The priorities of the Workforce Training Fund include projects, which will lead to increased job retention or job growth, increased wages, more productive and competitive companies, improved ability to do business in Massachusetts and commitments to increased private investment in training.

"The Workforce Training Fund has proven to be a remarkable resource to Massachusetts businesses looking to address their business needs," said Nancy Snyder, President and CEO of Commonwealth Corporation. "We encourage all businesses, regardless of size, to contact us to learn more about the Workforce Training Fund and training grants that are available."

Increased funding available through the Hiring Incentive Training Grant is another example of the Patrick Administration's commitment to supporting Massachusetts veterans. The Administration is a leading provider for veteran services and continues to implement employment assistance and workforce training programs for veterans. In addition to providing priority service for veterans at each of the Department of Career Services' One-Stop Career Centers, the Administration also launched an aggressive employment campaign focused on increasing the hiring of Massachusetts veterans. Among these initiatives, the Patrick Administration has partnered with major trade associations to encourage them to hire veterans, circulate information on veterans' benefits and educate local employers about the skills service members gain the military.

Today's announcement is more welcomed news within the veteran community, especially in advance of Veteran's Day and the Patrick Administration's annual "Hire a Vet Month" that will be celebrated throughout November.

"Employment is a critical component for a veteran's successful transition back into civilian life," said Secretary of Veterans Services Coleman Nee. "Massachusetts leads the nation in veterans' services, and with this increased incentive we will continue to lead the way while maximizing both public and private sector resources to ensure we provide our veterans with the employment opportunities they have earned."

To learn more about workforce training initiatives, visit www.mass.gov/lwd or for more details about the Hiring Incentive Training Grant visit www.mass.gov/hiringgrant.

Hopkinton Networkers Group: Interview Workshop - Oct 4th

Hello Everyone,

The agenda for this Friday's Hopkinton Networkers Group (HNG) meeting will be an Interview Workshop. The facilitator for this week will be William Lam. We will devote the first hour, from 10 to 11 AM to the following agenda: Welcome, Landings, Announcements, New Member Intros, and Needs and Leads.

Important Note: We are going to start the meeting on time at 10:00 AM. In the second hour, William will conduct an "Interview Workshop."

After a number of months with speakers, it is time for a break. We have had an Interview Workshop a few times in the past, and it was always enlightening, rewarding and fun.

Interview Workshop

Each person will be both an interviewee and interviewer. We start off by someone is selected to be interviewed and selects an interview question from the jar/can of interview questions. The person is asked the question by the interviewer and his / her response is analyzed by the group with possible suggestions for a better response. The person selected to be interviewed now becomes the interviewer and selects someone to be interviewed, and the process is continued until everyone has had a chance to conduct both roles.

Recap of HNG Meeting of September 20, 2013:

Our 107th meeting of HNG had 39 people, this is 7 more than the previous meeting; 12 signed the New Member list. Gil Krispien was our facilitator. There were 6 introduction speeches.

Know anyone who needs some job search stress busting? (please share)

Hi Steve. I want to give you a heads up on a new blog I created.

There's no shortage of sites out there on job search logistics (resumes, interviews, etc.), but not so many about how to navigate the stress and fear that rears its head along the way.

With that in mind, I created Job Search Stress Busters, spotlighting tips and techniques for managing stress while looking for work. Here's the URL:
www.jobsearchstressbusters.com

If you know anyone in the job search, could you forward this? And if you know of any online forums, etc. where you think this might be appropriate and helpful, feel free to post the link. Thanks!

HNG August 2, 2013 Agenda; Speaker on "Law of Attraction: Five Basic Principles to Make Your Career Dreams Come True"

Hello Everyone,

The agenda for this Friday's Hopkinton Networkers Group (HNG) meeting will be featured by speaker, Joellyn Schwerdlin. The facilitator for this week will be Salpi Sarafian. We will devote the first hour, from 10 to 11 AM to the following agenda: Welcome, Landings, Announcements, New Member Intros, and Needs & Leads. Please arrive early, so we can make every effort to start on time. In the second hour, Joellyn will talk about "Law of Attraction: Five Basic Principles to Make Your Career Dreams Come True."
Law of Attraction: Five basic Principles to Make Your Career Dreams Come True

The "Law of Attraction" is a metaphysical phenomenon which has been around since the Universe was created. When used correctly and strategically, The Law of Attraction will bring you whatever your heart desires, such as more money, better relationships and a career you love. The Law of Attraction received a great deal of publicity in 2007 when the book: The Secret (by Rhonda Byrne) and companion DVD were published.

Joellyn Wittenstein Schwerdlin, career coach and experienced public speaker, has practiced Law of Attraction principles for many years, even before The Secret was published. Joellyn can attest that the Law of Attraction works, because of what she's manifested in her life. She has also noticed that when her clients practice these principles, they seem to land jobs much faster.

Here's what Joellyn will cover in her presentation:
1) Five Basic Principles of Law of Attraction
* Understand sympathetic vibrations: like attracts like
* Raise your vibrations: the importance of feeling good
* Change your mood: you have the power
* Follow four steps to deliberate creation
* Allow the Law of Attraction to work: The absence of doubt
2) How to apply Law of Attraction principles to attract your ideal job and career

She will also be raffling off a book -- Law of Attraction: The Science of Attracting More of What You Want and Less of What You Don't written by Michael J. Losier.
Here's what the raffle winner from Joellyn's last presentation said: "I read the book and put it into action. It has truly changed my life and put me back in the frame of mind that will work for me.
Thank you for your talk and the book. I am employed and got the position I was looking for."
