What is your price?

We each have our price. The question is, what’s yours?

Tamsen McMahon asks this question in her post here

Especially during your job search this is a question to address and have an answer ready for. Go into the interview prepared to wow them and win an offer. Be prepared for what it will be.

Avoid finding out after the fact that it is not what you want, or can live with. Know what you need to. Use your network of friends to help find out as much as your can before. It will make your decision so much easier.

First Scholarship to PodCamp WesternMA

I would really like to attend the PodCamp. I am familiar with social media and networking but need to learn more. I have the basics down for blogging, Facebook, Twitter, and Flickr. I know very little about podcasting and videocasting. Discussion and interaction with leaders and attendees would really help me add to my existing knowledge. My small design studio and gluten free cooking blog would greatly benefit if I could figure a way to efficiently use these resources to grow and connect to the community. Best yet, I'd love to find out more about possible jobs in the social media field that would welcome my background and experience.

Congratulations to Sarah Platanitis! She is the first recipient of a scholarship to PodCamp WesternMA.

Sarah's gluten-free cooking blog is  Sarah In the Kitchen

Show how you are perfectly qualified

Recruiter Kristen Fife said that one reason hiring managers hesitate is that they fear the overqualified worker will soon leave.  Related to that is concern the worker will be bored, won’t have a career path, or won’t be happy with the position.

Read the full article on Jobfully to get a good listing of way to overcome the over qualified tag. It is not easy but it is possible.

Is there anything you would add to the list?

What has worked for you?

"I felt I needed to react, but I didn’t"

... the recession has had other ramifications on the working than on the non-working. “I’m trying hard to hang on, and I overlook a lot, I don’t have the energy to deal with harassment, I’ve got too many other things to manage, and my mortgage is one of them.” She is not alone in her thinking. Women taking “stop gap” jobs, going back to restaurant work to supplement income or unemployment are also letting borderline casual comments or innuendo slide. “Hey, when it’s your tip, you have to grin and bear it.” Another friend who was a former account executive in financial services firm has taken a part-time job in retail. She said she’s faced similar situations. “I look at it as a part-time job and hopefully not for the long term, I tune out a lot.” “The rules are the same, yet people here seem to have their own interpretation of what is “culturally acceptable.” Hmmm…

Carolyn goes on to explain the slips and slides that she is finding these days. This raises good questions.

"Don't believe what people say. There are jobs out there."

"There's this new norm of 10 percent less of everything."
And a new norm for movers and shakers trying to make ends meet.
Fox is still running his company, Fox Media Lab, and he's still throwing irons into the proverbial fire. He's even working on a book.
But sometimes he does so during his overnight shift as a concierge.
Or while waiting for a fare.
"I've said, 'I'm in a cab, I've got to get back to you.' They don't know I'm driving it," the father of four from Natick said of talking with prospective clients.
"For me, I'm not worried about it. In my DNA, I'm an entrepreneur. I'm going to make a comeback. ... But there is a whole class of people that have lost their job and don't know how to make a comeback. In some cases, there is no comeback" to make because the job market has changed so much since the first rumblings of economic meltdown. "Those positions are gone."
Statistics can tell you how many American banks and mortgage companies went belly-up and how many were "too big to fail."
Fox can tell you about how his property went into foreclosure after WaMu, Washington Mutual, went down.
You can read the full article about Joe Fox and how he is surviving his job search in the Milford Daily News.

thoughts on your shadow

I spend some time making sure I appear distinct and properly professional. You likely do as well. Are you also thinking about what you leave behind?

I thought about this when running the other day. The sun was bright. The snow dazzlingly. My shadow was far longer than I am tall (and I am tall - 6'2" for those who haven't met me in person yet).

What kind of shadow do you cast?

What kind of talk will people have about you when you leave their immediate company?

Are you making a good lasting and distinct impression?

What can you do about that?

"one of the cardinal career sins: hit-and-run networking"

... when it comes to job search and career building, hit-and-run networking is a rotten strategy all around. Smart networking is not only about the job you need; it’s about creating a foundation of support for the rest of your career.
The most powerful networking happens when your focus is NOT what you want right now, but instead on building relationships – lasting relationships that will endure for years to come. Even if you never see a person again, you get the best overall results when you relate to each and every contact with this same long-term approach.
Don't be a hit-and-run networker, continue to read what RonniAnn has to say here
